Why I Chose to Celebrate Fall-O-Ween over Halloween?
The timing of this post may seem a little off, but God is always on time! I never understood the history of Halloween until I researched a little further this year. I feel it’s something that God had laid on my heart to receive understanding and insight.
A little background on myself would be that I grew up celebrating Halloween like most kids do. My mom always took me trick or treating throughout the years. I always wanted to decorate heavily, but she never really did. My grandmother always taught us that it was the devil’s birthday or an evil holiday. She never decorated, but didn’t want to feel guilty about not giving the children candy. I never understood. As I got older my Mom took me to Halleluiah night at the local church. I watched all the Halloween movies like; Hocus Pocus, Halloween Town, Sabrina the teenage Witch, Practical Magic, and even The Craft! Not knowing the dark spiritual drawing and implication that it could have on my life. I was always so attracted to Halloween and never knew why? But I believe that the slightest seed of darkness can grow and draw us in, and have a impact on our life.
I never questioned it until this year. I wanted a more in depth understanding. I found a post that a friend had shared on Facebook where Jenny Weaver Warns of the Spiritual Dangers of Halloween. I had read a few other posts prior to that. I feel that God just kept lining them up to give me the understanding I was looking for.
History of Halloween’s Evil Origins
I also never knew that Halloween came about by the Celtics in Europe from a festival called Samhain. Halloween is also a celebration of the dead. In an attempt by Christian popes to replace the pagan holiday is how it became known as all souls day. A day where the living would pray for the souls of the dead saints. Eventually becoming know as All Hallows Eve, and then Halloween.
The origin of Halloween represents death and darkness. Halloween isn’t celebrated until dark falls. From October 31st to November 2nd is the widow when the the veil was the thinnest between the 2 worlds between the dead and the living. This time frame was thought to be when spirits could easily pass from the dead among the living. The early belief was that people would leave candy on their door step for the evil spirits opting for a treat rather than a trick from the evil spirit. Costumes came into play when they would dress up to ward off the evil spirits. There were also other various dark rituals such as animal sacrifice as well. This was where bats came into play also the bonfires attracted bugs, and the bats were tempted for a tasty meal.
Some may try to argue that the origin of the holiday has a religious background. Since the popes tried to re-invent something evil into a good holiday for substitute. I beg to differ. It’s very clear that Halloween and its origin is rooted in darkness. For example the druids or magicians wanted to please the deity’s with sacrifices and bonfires. Just like in the bible when it warns to stay away for sorcery, and fortune tellers.
Also research shows that every type of crime out there rises by 50 percent on this Halloween Day. This should definitely say that evil is at work on one of the most evil days of the year. I love what Jenny Weaver said something to the effect of ” we are going to celebrate Christ three hundred and sixty four days out of the year and then on this one day celebrate the Devil.” She also said that this is the one day you shouldn’t want your children participating in.
Closing the Door to Evil
I began to rethink my participation in this holiday, and what I might want for my children. The Lord then laid this scripture on my heart 2nd Corinthians 6:14 Amplified “For what partnership can righteousness have with lawlessness? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?” This was a powerful revelation from the Lord more clear than ever. I now understand why many Christians choose not to celebrate this holiday in their homes; Why they chose to close the door to evil; leaving no open door for the enemy or evil spirits to operate in their lives.
This is why I chose not to allow my children to participate in Halloween this year. My children are 18 months and the other is almost 4. I believe that we are responsible for their spirituality, and the traditions that we hold helps to shape their beliefs. I want to equip, and raise children of light having no fellowship with darkness. It is our responsibility to be led of the Holy Spirit in order to guide our children into what is right, and good. In the bible it says train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
Celebrating Jesus through Fall Harvest
This year instead of going trunk or treating or anything else. We chose Fall-O-Ween! At our church this fall we celebrated Are you Fall -O- Ween Jesus? We celebrated all things fall, and Jesus at the “In Christ I am conference.” We had wonderful games, treats, hayride, face paintings, food, and Jesus. We came back home from this conference so empowered. Make Jesus the center of it all. I felt so good about this decision, and no regrets. I didn’t feel like I had missed out on anything. I don’t believe there is a substitute for this holiday. There’s no way we can make something good out of something that originated from evil origins. So don’t feel guilty if you choose to not celebrate this day at all. After all many other religions find it ok to not even celebrate Christmas. So Why should I celebrate Halloween? Let’s celebrate Fall and harvest time instead. Falling into and following Jesus.
